Thanksgiving Jerusalem Style 2006: The Triple's Fifth Anniversary

Amalia Oren, director of social work at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem where I work, came down to show me a well-worn edition of LaIsha. On the cover of this women's magazine was a beautiful model. There was something familiar about the eyes. I looked again and again. But it wasn't until I opened to an inside page and saw her as she looked when we first met, that I said: "Leah."

On Weddings And Children...
We were at a wedding, which in retrospect was a significant venue, when a woman, whom I didn't know, asked me if I would "talk" with her husband. I thought about what a friend, who is a physician, says when people ask him medical questions at weddings, bar mitzvah celebrations or the like. He says: "No problem, but as I take your questions seriously, please disrobe so I can be thorough, or I can give you an appointment at my office tomorrow." He rarely (I should say never) has had a "patient" disrobe for an examination at a wedding.

Giving A 'Loan' From The Bank Hanafshi (Emotional Bank)

By Dr. Judith Guedalia and Chaim K.

When he was wheeled into my office for our weekly appointment, I noticed a change. He seemed to be bursting with something that I couldn't place. No sooner had his aide/"pusher" left the room, Chaim K. started speaking.

A Bonnet* Lass

She is eight years old and was referred for neuropsychological assessment consequent to being in a car accident when she was only a few months old. By age eight, both sides of the lawsuit had waited a sufficient amount of time (according to the pediatric neurologist) to evaluate the effects of the accident.

Taking Home The Lessons Of Gan Eden - Ultimate Kindergarten (Part Two)

Last week I related right after Simchat Torah and the beginning of the new cycle of Torah readings, how I was pondering about my role in helping patients in my practice, based on the first readings about Gan Eden. In returning one of the many phone messages I received during the previous week, I finally did make telephone contact with the urgent caller.

Taking Home The Lessons Of Gan Eden: The Ultimate Kindergarten (Part One)
After not even a week since Simchat Torah, and starting the "whole thing (the cycle of life) again," I wondered what I might learn about the "Garden of Eden thing" to help me be a better shlicha (conduit) of Hashem in my professional life - psychology and neuropsychology. The word Gan (of Gan Eden) translates into Kindergarten, which led me to think that there is a lot to be learned from that place! In fact, the importance of what is learned in Gan (kindergarten) has been stated very well in a popular, secular book, the perennial best seller, All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten, by Robert Fulghum.

A Schnitzel In Time... Saves Lives!
"We need a consult," said the voice on the other side of the phone. A quick look at the LED read-out on my "smart-phone," anchored the caller to the pediatric nephrology department. "She is 11 years old and refuses to comply with the dietary requirements of her ESRD."

An Open Letter To You...Woman!
I can't believe it! I can't believe you are gone from this world. I can't believe it is Erev Shabbat and Erev Sukkot, and I am debating which earrings and shoes to wear as I wait for my lift to the Beit HaChaim (cemetery) in Beit Shemesh, Israel, where the sun never sets.

'High Man' On The Totem Pole

Dr. Judith Guedalia and Chaim K.*

The meanings of the designs on totem poles are as varied as the cultures that produce them. Totem poles may recount familiar legends, clan lineages or notable events. Some poles are erected to celebrate cultural beliefs, but others are intended mostly as artistic presentations.

Sukkot: Temporary Dwellings And The Woman With The Scarf Knotted Under Her Chin

She came in, sat down at the table, and in faltering English said, "I just wanted to say goodbye".  Odd, I thought, since she had just arrived! I looked perplexed and a woman to my right said knowingly, in European-accented Hebrew (the "new" international language in synagogues), "She probably just got her visa."
